KALI GREY
artist, educator
& sound therapist

Welcome, and thank you for visiting!

Kali is fascinated by creativity and improvisation,
and has explored their application in musical performance and composition,
education, acting, writing and, most recently, sound therapy.

Please look through the paragraphs below
to find out more about which of Kali's interests are of interest to you, too.

Music

Kali began playing tenor saxophone at age 11 without any prior musical experience, and went on to study music at the university level. For more information about Kali's musical history, please visit the music page. To find out more about recordings that she has played on, please click here. Recordings and videos of previous performances can be found at events.

Improv Theatre

In 2007 Cal;i was introduced to the Tokyo improvised theatre community, and became a regular member of workshops and performances. She's now a respected teacher within that community, as a part of Tokyo Comedy Store's In the Moment program and leading her own workshops. More information on Kali's experience can be found here, and on workshops here.

Writings

Kali has enjoyed writing fiction since her school years. More recently, she has produced two practical guides to various aspects of music education that are available through the products page, and since the summer of 2016 has begun writing poetry. Her blog is a mixture of non-fiction explorations and poetry, and a book on creativity and identity is in the works.

Composition

After being greatly inspired by jazz, in particular John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and Steve Lacy, Kali went on to create an instrumental and vocal composing style that is both melodic and unique, experimental yet familiar. Many of Kali''s performances and albums feature her original compositions. The music page has more detailed information about Kali's musical history.

Education

Kali has enjoyed teaching since her first professional experience doing so at 18. Since then, she has gained a great deal of experience teaching both individuals and groups, in musical theory and performance and various theatre contexts. More information about the classes she currently offers is available here.

Biofield Tuning

Kali became very interested in sound healing during the summer of 2017, in particular the powerful self-generated sounds of chanting. This personal research culminated in a decision to pursue qualification as a practitioner of sound therapy, in particular the technique of Biofield Tuning. More information about this fascinating modality be found here.
Kali also enjoys hiking, and is an avid reader of fiction and non-fiction,
particularly philosophy and traditional spiritual texts. She also loves movies, comics and good food.
These interests are not currently featured on this website, though!
Kali is also a proud member of the transgender and non-binary community in Japan and internationally
(and formerly known as Huw Lloyd).
